What the Saudi e-visa costs for UK citizens
The Saudi e-visa charge for a British passport holder is a bundle, not one fee. Here is what sits inside it and where the 2026 figure is published.

A British passport holder applying for the Saudi tourist e-visa pays one charge at checkout that contains several things: the government application fee, a compulsory medical insurance premium, and then whatever your UK card adds converting sterling into riyals. Nobody outside the official portal can tell you today’s total, and the sites that try are usually quoting a figure from a year that has passed. What is worth knowing is how the charge is built, so that when you see the number you can tell whether it is the real one.
One payment, more than one component
The United Kingdom was among the countries included when Saudi Arabia opened its tourist e-visa scheme in 2019, and British applicants have used the online route ever since. From the beginning, the amount presented at checkout combined the visa charge itself with an insurance policy that is issued as part of the visa rather than bought separately. You do not choose the insurer and you cannot decline the cover. This is why a “Saudi visa fee” quoted on a forum is almost always lower than the amount that actually leaves your account — it is quoting one component of a bundle.
Why there is no number on this page
Because the number changes and a stale figure is worse than none. Both the application charge and the bundled premium have been revised since the scheme launched, and revisions are not always announced loudly. The official Saudi e-visa portal shows the complete amount, in the currency it will charge, on the screen before you confirm payment. That is the figure to plan around. If a visa agency quotes you something higher, the gap is their service charge; if it quotes something lower, treat it as a reason for suspicion rather than a bargain.
Sterling to riyals: the part your bank controls
The charge is made in Saudi riyals. Your bank or card issuer converts it at their rate, and many UK debit and credit cards add a non-sterling transaction fee on top — commonly a small percentage of the amount, set out in your account terms rather than by Saudi Arabia. Two British travellers who applied on the same afternoon can be debited different sterling totals for identical visas purely because of this. A travel card or an account that does not charge for foreign transactions removes the surcharge; it does not remove the exchange rate.
| Component | Who decides it | Where you see the real figure |
|---|---|---|
| Visa application charge | Saudi authorities | Official e-visa portal at checkout |
| Compulsory insurance | Set within the visa scheme | Included in the same checkout total |
| Non-sterling conversion and fee | Your UK bank or card issuer | Cardholder terms and your statement |
| Agency service charge | The agency, if you use one | Their invoice — never the portal |
The e-visa is not the only route, and the others cost differently
British travellers reach Saudi Arabia through more than one door. The online tourist e-visa is the usual one for a holiday or a stopover. Separately, Saudi Arabia has operated a visa-on-arrival facility for travellers holding certain other valid visas or residencies, under conditions the authorities set and adjust. Business, work and religious-purpose visas sit in entirely different categories with their own channels and their own costs. A fee you read about for one of these tells you nothing about the tourist e-visa. Work out which route your trip actually needs before comparing any price at all.
What approval gives you, and what it does not
An approved e-visa is authorisation to travel to Saudi Arabia and to present yourself at the border. Admission is still the decision of the officer at the port of entry. The visa also carries a defined validity period and a maximum stay per entry, both set by the Saudi authorities and both revised more than once since 2019 — so read the terms printed on your own approval rather than a stay length quoted in an older article. If your plans depend on a particular length of stay, that is a question for the official channel before you book anything.
If it is refused, or if you make a mistake
The charge is not generally treated as a refundable deposit. Mismatches between your passport and your entered details, an expired or nearly expired passport, or a photograph that fails the portal’s requirements can all mean starting again with a fresh payment. Checking your passport details character by character before submitting is the cheapest ten minutes of the whole application. If your circumstances are unusual, ask the Saudi embassy or the official portal rather than a forum.
Budget for getting online, not just for getting in
The visa is one cost; arriving able to use your phone is another, and it is the one British travellers most often leave to chance. Your approval, your accommodation booking and your return flight are all documents on a screen, and you may be asked to produce them on arrival. Roaming from a UK network in Saudi Arabia is billed outside your domestic allowance unless your plan explicitly says otherwise, which is worth checking against your own contract before you fly.
An eSIM avoids the problem in a different way: you install it before departure and it activates when you land, with no shop queue and no local paperwork. What an eSIM actually is covers the basics if you have not used one, how coverage works in Saudi Arabia covers the networks, and current options are on the pricing page.
The short version
Apply through the official Saudi portal, take the checkout total as the only real figure, remember that the insurance is inside it, and expect your UK card to add its own conversion cost after the fact. Everything else you read is someone’s estimate.
